The challenge
The fundamental problem with modern supply chains lies in their extreme consolidation and globalization. A large portion of global semiconductor and wafer production is concentrated in a few, geographically highly concentrated clusters in Asia. Political tensions, trade conflicts, extreme weather events, or disruptions at major logistics hubs have immediate global repercussions.
In addition, many procurement processes in small and medium-sized businesses tend to rely on single-sourcing scenarios to keep administrative burdens to a minimum. If that one partner fails to deliver, the entire supply chain collapses due to a lack of alternatives.
Risks for Businesses
Neglecting supply chain risk management leads to a chain reaction that takes a toll on the entire company:
Financial Losses
When assembly lines come to a standstill, fixed operating costs continue to accrue unabated—an economic loss that almost always far exceeds the cost of preventive safety measures. Siemens outlined this in the article “The True Cost of One Hour of Downtime: An Industry Analysis” and estimates the costs for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to be in the six-figure range.
Loss of reputation and market share
Late deliveries or empty warehouses result in contractual penalties and frustrated end customers, who, in the worst-case scenario, may switch to the competition permanently.
Loss of Innovative Capacity
When highly qualified R&D engineers have to spend valuable work time validating stopgap technical solutions, the development of future-proof products falls by the wayside, and the competition gains an edge in time-to-market.
Quality Risks in Purchasing
When facing acute supply pressures, companies tend to make panic purchases through unsecured channels, which drastically increases the risk of rejects, counterfeits, or defective goods. Especially during allocation phases, new companies are often founded that, while presenting themselves as professional, lack the processes and contacts that have been developed over decades.
RTS electronic’s Solution Approach
RTS electronic GmbH, based in Waltrop, addresses these structural risks with maximum agility and customized solutions. As a manufacturer-independent partner, we offer you the flexibility that rigid franchise structures, by their very nature, cannot provide:
Global Sourcing: Instead of limiting ourselves to the constraints of a fixed product lineup, we draw on a global, audited network of over 2,000 manufacturers and verified suppliers. This allows us to establish reliable alternative sourcing channels (second sourcing).
Demand-Based Inventory Management Strategies: We tailor our approach to your risk profile. You have the flexibility to decide on the volume of your safety stock—whether as rolling partial coverage (e.g., 20–40%) to ease the burden on your main supplier or as full coverage of your annual needs to secure price and availability.
Physical Risk Diversification & Technical Protection: To eliminate logistical risks or force majeure, we store your components at two geographically independent locations upon request. Each component is monitored according to the latest standards, including professional conditioning in our Memmert drying ovens, to completely rule out moisture damage before further processing.
Proactive Database Monitoring: Every component sourced through RTS is continuously monitored via a specialized, external database for regulatory compliance and technical risks. This allows us to identify impending obsolescence risks before they become an acute problem. For example, if a component’s status changes to NRND (Not Recommended for New Design) or if the manufacturer issues a PTN (Product Termination Notification), we will immediately send you proactive notifications so you can respond in a timely manner.
Structured Emergency Procedures & Clear Decision-Makers: Risk management also means being prepared for the unforeseeable. Together with you, we establish clear processes that immediately bring structure to the response in the event of unforeseen incidents. If, for example, an environmental disaster occurs that abruptly halts production, no time should be wasted on internal questions of responsibility. We define in advance exactly which individuals must respond immediately in the event of a crisis and who makes the final management decisions. This ensures extreme speed when every hour counts.
In practice
The situation: As part of our ongoing database monitoring, the system triggered an alert regarding a semiconductor on a customer’s control board: The manufacturer had changed the component’s status to NRND (Not Recommended for New Design). Since the customer’s end product has been on the market for a long time, there was an urgent need to take action even before an official discontinuation notice was issued.
The joint strategy: Thanks to this early warning, the customer did not face a time crunch. RTS electronic immediately analyzed the market and proposed a pin-compatible technical alternative. Over the following months, the customer’s R&D department was able to review, test, and qualify this alternative for mass production at its own pace.
A perfectly timed solution: When the manufacturer finally issued the official PTN (Product Termination Notification) about two years later, the alternative was already fully operational, and a production halt was thus averted. However, since the original component was still needed in its exact original condition for many years to come by a single, strategically important end customer, RTS acted immediately: We secured the required remaining quantity at the official LTB (Last Time Buy). The components are now safely and properly stored under nitrogen at our logistics center in Waltrop for the coming years to fulfill the customer’s long-term service and delivery obligations without risk.
FAQ – Frequently asked questions
Why is RTS electronic more resilient to global logistics crises than other distributors?
Traditional franchise businesses are bound by manufacturers’ fixed, often contractually rigid allocation systems. We, on the other hand, operate freely on the global market. If a shortage threatens on a particular route or from a specific manufacturer, we immediately switch to alternative, verified sources in other regions of the world.
What does “redundant storage” actually mean for my security of supply?
This ensures maximum reliability. Should an unforeseeable event occur at one of our logistics locations (e.g., storm damage or local infrastructure issues), your inventory is protected by its geographic separation at the second location and remains immediately accessible.
How can we ensure that the quality of the components does not deteriorate during extended storage?
Our quality management team closely monitors storage conditions. Humidity and temperature are continuously monitored by sensors that immediately trigger an alarm if threshold values are exceeded. Sensitive electronic components (MSD = Moisture Sensitive Devices) are packaged (e.g., in a nitrogen atmosphere) and stored in accordance with strict guidelines. If necessary, we use our high-precision Memmert drying ovens to ensure the components are in perfect, ready-to-use condition before shipment.
How can RTS help reduce the cost of a BOM (bill of materials) while still managing risk?
Risk management doesn’t have to be expensive. Thanks to our global network, we can take advantage of market conditions in which components are available at lower prices in certain regions. We pass this cost savings on to you. In addition, our proactive inventory management protects you from unpredictable price spikes by manufacturers.
